 Match Report

LEICESTER POLSKA were left cursing their missed chances and a series of poor refereeing decisions as they somehow managed to lose 4-3 to Desford United. Despite a scintillating first half performance they failed to see the game out and were left to pick over another defeat. Savvo Wiezcorek tested the Desford keeper after jsut 2 minutes, his powerful shot being tipped round the post. Chris Rudkin, making his debut, then went close from the subsequent corner, but it was left to Rich Ellis - making his 50th appearance for the club along with Mark Inglis - to open the scoring after 4 minutes. His thunderbolt shot from fully 35 yards out will already be a contender for goal of the season. Inglis then doubled Polska's advantage on 11 minutes, after mesmerising footwork from Vernon Harper, another new player making his debut. Savvo Wiezcorek then missed a chance on 15 minutes from a Rich Ellis cross, but then fluffed an easier one 4 minutes later from a Chris Eames pass. Ellis then shot wide on 32 minutes, whilst skipper Tom Lane then had a tremendous shot tipped over on 35 minutes, which from the subsequent corner saw Savvo hit the bar. Polska keeper Jason Hughes had his first shot to save on 38 minutes, such was Polska's dominance. Chris Eames then flashed a shot over the bar on 40 minutes, whilst Wieczorek missed a glorious chance on 43 minutes, putting the ball wide after being put through by Eames. Polska then paid the price after Desford pounced on some indecision by the home side to nick a lifeline right on half time. Controversy was to follow, after the referee incorrectly awarded Desford a free kick on the edge of the area on 56 minutes - but only due to Tom Lane showing dissent as the ball had already run out of play. Desford duly equalised, and Polska were rocked by this - so much so that Desford took the lead just 5 minutes later. Polska's frustrations boiled over, with Stef Thornton being harshly red carded even though he had already been substituted. Desford went 4-2 up on 71 minutes. Polska then went for the win, with new signing Rui Da Costa coming on and Rudkin shooting wide on 75 minutes, although he then found the net three minutes later to make it 4-3. Desford hung on though, to claim their first win of the season, leaving Polska to wonder how they lost.
